For all of the talk about digital, if your organization has a first-class IT department, a slick e-commerce offering and has been ahead of the pack in investing in new technologies over the years, you may think ‘digital transformation’ isn’t a priority for you.

But you’d be wrong.‘Digital transformation is not fundamentally about technology. It is about a shift in corporate mindset – a change in culture to be able to really benefit from all that digital has to offer. This is the proposition made in an important a new White Paper from HEC Paris business school.

Investing in new technologies is not enough to ensure an organization’s survival in our disrupted and increasingly competitive business environment. Instead, leaders must also invest in adapting their company cultures to both embrace and think beyond technological solutions, say the paper’s authors, Jean-Rémi Gratadour, Kristine de Valck, Marie-Hélène Delmond and Stéphane Madoeuf.

Future success as we move into the era of AI, will rely upon human initiative and, crucially, a business leader’s ability to cultivate a mind-set for embracing and adopting new ideas amongst employees.

“Digital transformation is not only about adopting new technologies or economic opportunities. It’s highly cultural. Gone are the days of all-powerful managers controlling events from their ivory towers. Leaders need to become doers who are not afraid of challenging ideas and being challenged by their teams.” Jean-Rémi Gratadour, Executive Director of HEC Paris’ Digital Centre and co-author of the White Paper.

The Paper covers the complete journey of digital transition with chapters built around:

  • Encouraging a culture for lifelong learning
  • Agile management
  • Customer-centric data analytics
  • The importance of a “human-driven” digital transformation

At the heart of the White Paper is the overriding message that digital transformation can be embraced by all, regardless of their skill level or function, if business leaders can encourage each member of their teams to share their ideas and knowledge, and work together.
