Good managers need to be good coaches. Furthermore, despite initial reluctance Schmidt came to believe every executive, including himself as CEO, can benefit from coaching, because people are never good at seeing themselves as others see them.

A manager does not become a good coach by chance. It is important to develop a coaching style, understand how to focus the coaching initiative, create value through conversations and feedback, and to foster a culture of developmental coaching.
